In high school, exposure to nonfiction including memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, and historical nonfiction is important to draw students to read on interesting and historically significant topics and people.
Reading about figures such as monarchs, past presidents, and regular human beings with stories to tell are really important to broadening a teen's understanding and empathetic ability in our world.
Building on my predominantly fiction-based classroom library, I would love for students to have a greater selection of nonfiction books to explore their interests in my classroom.
These books will be checked out to students on an individual basis in my classroom to use during our silent reading time at the beginning of each class.
Adding that reading time up over the course of a school year, each student will accomplish close to 16 full hours of reading in class alone.
