The classroom set of novels, Fahrenheit 451, my students read each year are literally dying...just like the books in the novel. While Guy Montag watches books burn, my students watch their books slowly die as the pages fall out and litter the classroom and hallways. As I piece the books back together each year, securing each with a rubber band, I wonder if they will make it to see another year? Are there enough 鈥済ood copies鈥 so that students don鈥檛 have to race into the room to get the best book...the one with the clean cover and NOT held together with a rubber band. A new classroom set (35) of novels help students to focus on the words rather than the page numbers (as the try to make sure their book isn鈥檛 missing any pages).
