Students become engaged when they feel like their voices and experiences matter. Throughout their time in school, they've read many stories but far too often do these students feel disconnected from what they're reading.
Students need to feel like their stories matter.
By exploring the stories presented in "Refugee", students will be exploring themes and issues surrounding war, family, and the loss of childhood innocence. This project will provide a class set of books as well as journals for each individual student to use during the story. They will read and keep a journal of their shared experiences while reading.
It is my goal that by the end of the story, students will understand the effects of war and also how people hold onto what's most important even in the most difficult situations.
