Every student expresses their interest to play the guitar at one point in time! We currently have 12 guitars in our district, however they are much too big for my 5th graders! Their hands don't reach over the fret board, and there are far too many students per guitar. So why not give them an alternative?! The ukulele is the perfect size for 5th grade hands, and with the ease of size and weight, my students will LOVE learning how to play some of their favorite songs on a stringed instrument.
Having ukuleles will develop their ability to read music and rhythms, which will increase their ability to be musically literate when they enter the middle school level. With the opportunities to play new instruments, it is likely that students will take more interest in joining band or choir in the future, thus growing the music department!
Ukuleles will also help develop our program quality, as we can incorporate playing the instruments at our spring concert! Having these ukuleles will enhance the quality of the classroom and concert experiences for all students, and audience members!
