In a vibrant and culturally diverse area such as the Bay Area/Silicon Valley, my classroom community represents various unique backgrounds, ethnicities and identities. I am requesting books that will help my students continue to explore and celebrate this! It is my goal to have a classroom library that supplies books that are both windows and mirrors for students- books that reflect their own lives and books that provide insight into the lives of students different from them. All students deserve to feel celebrated and confident, especially in their learning environment. Additionally, many of these books highlight valuable social justice issues, activism, and many other aspects of human diversity such as gender identity, ethnicity, histories, religion, and disabilities. Incorporating texts like these written by diverse authors and that feature diverse characters, sparks critical classroom conversation surrounding racial justice, compassion for all, and standing up for what you believe is right.
