My high school students are from the inner-city of a major metropolitan area. All 1100 students receive free or reduced price lunch, which is an indicator of the low-income environments from which they come from. The school has lacked funding from the city for quite some time, which has directly impacted the budget of the art program.
Despite these unfortunate circumstances, my students are amazing. When I began teaching art at this high school this year it became immediately clear how much they WANTED quality art instruction. My students crave the opportunity to express themselves and ideas in a creative manner, but have yet to experience true quality art materials in which to do so.
