Who says only wealthy students get to travel and experience other cultures? My middle school students have been researching, writing projects for high school credit, and fundraising since March. The goal is to establish the fact that there are no limits in life! They cannot afford to go to Europe. But they're making it happen anyway. Their desire to travel comes from the need to reach beyond their comfort zone in order to obtain new perspectives. History, math, and science are their pathways to deeper understanding of our current world issues.
Each student has really worked hard to make this trip a reality. But we have just a few more experiences that need to be funded. And who would go to Paris without going to Versailles?
Versailles is famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy. What better way to understand the power of a monarchy, than to experience first hand the colossal mansion afforded by such wealth? Seeing is understanding.
