The students that I teach often come from chaotic home situations and are unable to make positive, personal choices. Students who are given choices about their learning environment, such as the type of set that they learn in, often have more buy in and are in turn more engaged in their learning. Schools throughout the nation have tested this theory and found that their students have improved grades, are participating more, and are having more meaningful academic conversations with their teachers and peers.
Flexible seating classrooms are able to provide the learning environment that kids need.
Flexible seating also allows students to have movement while learning independently. Core strength has been proven to increase students reading scores.
This opportunity for my students to take ownership for their own learning is an exciting prospect. Teaching students to make responsible choices that personally enhance the way that they learn will have lasting effects throughout the educational process, as well as in their lives. Flexible seating choices can include dry erase mats that students can use to work problems together in a group, balance balls, stability wobble cushions, rockers, and inflatable chairs.
