We teach at a school where 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. In today's economy, our student's families are struggling to make ends meet. Our students often go home to empty houses, while their parents are working long hours in order to provide for their basic needs. For the past two volleyball seasons, we have coached 60 girls on two volleyball teams that have a true passion for the game, their team, their school, and us as their coaches. We, as their coaches, not only focus on the sport, but we also worry about their basic needs. We often find ourselves providing snacks, socks, and proper volleyball attire. Our girls constantly were asking us to have practice on Saturdays and to stay late after practice. They are dedicated to the sport and despite our lack of equipment, we have earned 1st and 3rd place two years in a row.
