The bean bag chairs and large pillow will do "double time". During learning activities, they will give students flexible seating enabling them to be more focused and less disruptive of their peers. Most of the students need personal space and an opportunity to move their bodies without infringing on others. In addition, flexible seating will enable "classroom conferencing" and less intimidating seating when peers need to work out differences.
Making the classroom a safe haven where students can take a breath, learn, and develop skills empowering them to navigate the world is at the core of this project. The books, posters, and deck of cards will be used as teaching resources and conversation starters. In addition, they will be used to set the tone of the room - a place of safety, where students can learn coping skills and appropriate conflict mediation. The easel will be used to display various posters and student work.
