Because distance learning can create obstacles to the types of in-person interactions and mutual learning that can happen, our class will be doing a weekly online read aloud with live discussion. And, because our students are very interested in learning and reading about people and subjects that reflect their own experiences and cultural identity, it will be important for us third grade teachers to have a collection of quality, culturally- relevant books to choose from.
Currently, we do not have a sufficient collection of quality books that reflect the cultures, experiences and histories of our diverse student body. In light of the recent surge in social movements for civil rights, equality and justice, we feel that it has never been more important to have quality resources that give students a springboard to use their own voices to discuss events and experiences that are important in their lives and communities.
