Many of the students in my English Language Arts classroom are struggling with literacy and engagement; e-readers like the Kindle Fire can solve both issues. Kindle e-readers possess built-in dictionaries, accessed by merely highlighting the word in question, which can help struggling readers to define and pronounce challenging words. In addition, many e-book titles have accompanying audiobook versions or are text-to-speech (TTS) enabled, allowing emerging readers to engage with the content and develop important literacy skills. With so many electronic devices within their grasp, print books are often the last thing struggling middle-school readers want to pick up. E-readers are fun, engaging, and will allow my students to develop into confident, capable readers. In addition to the many benefits e-readers will provide to my students, e-readers will also take up less space in the classroom and many e-book titles are cheaper than conventional print books. E-readers will enable our small, rural school to provide more titles to our students at a lower price. Help me provide my students with a rich, engaging learning experience that will benefit them for years to come—help support my e-reader project!
