My students love to read. I want to take this love of reading and integrate it into my engineering classroom. I inherited several large engineering and aerospace themed books with my classroom. While these have interesting photographs to look at, the text is not very accessible to my K-4 students. Every time I give students a chance to read independently, I get the question, "Where are the books that I can read by myself?"
The books that I have chosen will introduce my students to the ideas of noticing problems in the world, then working to solve those problems in a student-friendly way. The books will be added to my library for early finishers or choice time. Many of the books will also be used to tie in to classroom engineering lessons. First, I'll use the document camera during a read aloud so the whole class can see the book. Then, we will dive into discussing real world problems, brainstorming ideas to solve those problems, planning a solution, and finally building and testing that solution!
