In April, my 11th-grade AVID students will go on our highly anticipated "Junior Trip," wherein we’ll take a bus to visit several northern California colleges. As these students have very little exposure to the world beyond our city, this will be an eye-opening experience for them. For most of my students, this will be the very first time they’ve been away from their families overnight, and for many, their first time out of our community. On our way back home from our college visits, I would love to provide my first-generation college-bound students a day of relaxation and learning at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where they can marvel at ocean creatures, explore various ecosystems, and learn about conservation. Most of them have never been to an aquarium—they will be thrilled by the feel of a bat ray, humbled by the vastness of our oceans, and armed with insight about how to make positive changes for our environment. This trip will truly show them the sea of opportunities that await them in college and beyond!
