We study lifecycles when researching animals in 3rd grade during science and writing classes. I would like to teach the students what happens in the lifecycle of a chicken by having them watch and record what happens to fertilized eggs. We will use the incubator to take daily data on what is happening with the embryos and then chart their development in mathematics. We will then write books depicting what we have learned in our writing classes. Once the chickens hatch we will continue our learning in other hands-on ways.
It is important for student to see how science, math and reading connect. By using watching the chicks' development, we can do hand-on experiments and connect real world learning into our classroom of eight year olds.
