Empowering students with high interest books that they can successfully read on their own will positively change their attitudes toward reading. I have selected high interest, low readability chapter books that are perfect for students who are still acquiring the complexities of the English language. These books give students the opportunity to relate literature to their own lives at a level that they can access independently. Students will be excited to go to our classroom library and confident that they will be able to read a chapter book, just like their grade level peers.
Many English language learning students do not have equitable access to books. My students will often talk about their parents working late hours. Many families struggle to provide food and clothing and are unable to purchase books for students. Having a rich classroom library will enable my students to have a more equitable experience with literacy.
