Using stories from Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried and Aimme Phan's We Should Never Meet: Stories, my students will get a fuller picture of the price of American imperialism from multiple perspectives. O'Brien's semi-autobiographical stories reveal the horrors of the American draft and occupation of Vietnam from an American soldier's perspective; Phan's stories show the aftermath of the American Vietnam war--the fall of Saigon, "Operation Baby Lift" and, decades later, the lives of the orphans in the American foster system. These two texts explore themes of systems of power, collective trauma, survivor's guilt, white saviorism, and the power of collectivism and storytelling to heal and provide self-acceptance. Through the examination of these two Post Modern writers, my students will practice integrating experimental, unique styles into their own narrative writing.
