I teach general music to pre-school to 1st grade children in a diverse, urban, public school setting. These wonderful, high-energy students demonstrate great enthusiasm for school and learning. Our school is a Title I school, so we have a high number of students coming from low-income households. This is always a challenge, but the problem has become even worse with the ongoing economic challenges we're facing here in Michigan. Families, as well as schools, across the state are struggling to make ends meet. We barely have enough for books and supplies, so budgets for music and the arts just don't exist.
