Pre-teens love choice and movement! Flexible seating will help me fulfill both these needs for my students so that they can focus on learning.
Many of my students prefer to kneel, bounce, or stand while they work and this helps them stay engaged in the work. If they can do this freely, there is less chance of them disturbing others or becoming frustrated, all leading to a happier learning environment. Unfortunately, I can only provide them with old-fashioned lecture desks that give them very little space for movement. Everyone remembers their time at school - most of us sitting in hard chairs for hours on end. I would like my students to have different memories of school.
In the very limited flexible seating options, I can offer (like standing or kneeling at their ordinary desks, or lying on the floor), I have already seen students become more involved in the reading or collaborative work they are doing.
As Henry David Thoreau said, "Methinks that the minute my legs begin to move my thoughts begin to flow..." I aim to give my students as much flexibility as possible. For some that means constantly moving, for others, it just means a softer place to nestle for some reading. Your donation will go a long way to adding to my flexible seating options to create a haven where students can be comfortable and learn at the same time.
