All students deserve healthy minds, bodies, and souls. As the school therapist in an underserved neighborhood it is a miracle just to have a mental health clinician on site. Unfortunately, the therapist is not enough.
The students need tools to process and recover from trauma. While some of these items look like toys they are actually tools. The weighted dog and blanket can help an anxious or squirmy student feel calmer. The punching bag and sword can be a safe and healthy way to process anger. The sand and figurines can help a student tell their story when they do not yet have the words. The stickers are also used as symbols for the loving hearts or stinging bees in their lives.
All of these tools with be kept in the therapy room for mental health clinicians to use with the students who come to the wellness center. It may be a 5-10 minute cool down or full individual or group therapy sessions. We want to provide students with the tools to heal and get back to joys of childhood filled with learning and play.
