Students come to school with many challenges, which makes it hard to focus on math instruction. For students that have experienced trauma or have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, these challenges in focus can be insurmountable. Incorporating flexible seating options will make it easier for many students to focus on the lessons that are being taught since they will have space to be comfortable or to fidget without being a distraction.
When students have options in their seating arrangements, they will be able to put their entire focus into their learning. Students with a lot of energy can choose to stand while they work. Other students might be more comfortable on their floor with a clipboard. By giving students a choice, we can eliminate distractions in the classroom to make learning our priority.
With options other than the standard desks, we provide opportunities for all students to have their own space instead of being squished into tight rows. Students will no longer have to peer around their classmates to see the board; instead, they can sit in a place that is comfortable for them.
