My students need books that they can read in class and check out to complete their weekly reading logs. Many of my kiddos don’t have any books at home or transportation to a library. In order to complete their assignments, I have students who are borrowing books from younger siblings (think books at elementary reading levels). My ELA students need access to good books in order to become talented readers and writers! With selections like To Kill A Mockingbird and The House on Mango Street, students will learn more about diverse cultures and the human experience. Reading about strong protagonists overcoming adversity (among many other life lessons) will guide and encourage students on their own unique educational journeys. Without access to books, my English students are sadly limited.
