Students will read the many graphic novels requested in this project both in and out of school. Some of the requested texts include Hilo, Amulet, Dork Diaries, and Dog Man.
The graphic novel is a legitimate text format that is both entertaining and enriching for students.
Students can see the story arc laid out in both words and in images that enhance their comprehension of the text. This is beneficial to my many English language learners. Graphic novels are both exciting and "trendy" for students, so struggling readers are comfortable reading them - even those which are at a lower reading level. Their classmates with more advanced reading levels are enjoying those very same texts, so they are able to discuss and share them with one another, effectively building a community of readers.
This donation will significantly improve my classroom in a variety of meaningful ways. It will help my lowest readers access texts that will hook them on reading. It will support comprehension and vocabulary development for my many English language learners. It will help build a community of readers, in which advanced, intermediate, and beginning readers can connect over the same books. It will promote overall enthusiasm and excitement for reading.
