My students and I study the ways in which zombies in film, literature and mythology teach us all the important lesson of social justice. For instance, in a unit on George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, we look at the civil rights movement and how it influenced film maker's portrayal of race relations in the 60s. Students build their understanding of zombies as a metaphor both for slavery and for the power of unified social movements.
The class culminates with the students creating their own graphic novels that portray issues of social justice or injustice in the world today. Students always want to see their creations come to life in full color, but I have never had the technology to make it happen. Having a nice color printer will mean that every student can leave with a beauty copy of the work to which they all contributed.
