Drumming on tables, throwing objects, breaking pencils, ripping paper, tilting chairs both backward and forward, getting out of seats, hiding in unsafe areas, leaving the classroom, and so much more. Everything previously listed are common occurrences in the classroom. A lot of this can be prevented through flexible seating. Flexible seating helps satisfy sensory needs and also contributes towards a safe work environment. Unfortunately, our school does not have the budget to fund the necessary tools needed for our students to "get their wiggles out" while they work in a way that does not distract themselves or their peers.
These materials will make an enormous difference in my students' learning as they are all tools to assist with various sensory needs. They will be placed in general education classrooms, our resource center, and sensory room.
