I started doing literature circles last year, after learning more about them through the graduate classes I am taking. My students LOVED working in the small groups, which were decided on by me after looking at data. This project gives the students choices and ownership of getting their part done for the group. Based on reading level, I give each group a choice of a few titles. Once the group chooses one, they decide how many pages they are going to read each day in order to participate in a group discussion. Each student has a role, which they rotate through. For example, there is a "Bridge Builder" who makes connections about the book, and "Diction Detective", who looks for interesting words or phrases in the reading. The biggest feedback I got last year was that students wanted more choices for books. I had already submitted my budget for the following year, and cannot afford to buy all these books with my own money. Thank you for your help!
