Students become more engaged in reading with books that relate to them. The more engagement you have the more active readers they become.
The books that were chosen focus on diversity and learning about the struggles that are part of life. By choosing books that encourage diversity and have challenging plots, students are able to critically think about what is going on. They learn about challenging issues and think about how they feel about it for themselves. These books will improve their critical thinking and active engagement with the topic. The goal is that by becoming more active in their reading, students begin to think critically.
