Interacting with the world through a small screen forms reading and writing habits that emphasize brevity and wit, often overlooking the depth and thoughtfulness possible in written language. Strategies for reading comprehension must be taught. One of the most effective ways of doing this is through modeling annotation.
Imagine being able to mirror, in real-time, with your classmates, how a literacy teacher reads. We know that effective language education happens in relationship. From the first poems and fairy tales read to us at bedtime to the dialogues we witnessed between our parents and guardians and practiced with our friends, language is an interactive experience.
Document cameras work they way old overhead projectors used to when I was in school, but instead of only using plastic transparencies, a teacher is no longer limited to the media they can use. I can use the same materials my students have in their hands and demonstrate the skills I am trying to teach much more effectively. I can also have students share their examples with their class quickly and easily, allowing peer-to-peer co-teaching to take place.
Literacy is a fundamental skill that my kids need in order to succeed. Having a tool like this can make a bridge to understanding how to work with more substantial text. My students, in danger of falling into the achievement gap, can gain an important foothold on their future.
I hope you'll consider contributing and help to spread the word about my project. Please let me know if you ave any questions or ideas to help me succeed.
