One of my greatest desires is to encourage students to put down their phones and pick up a book. The best books challenge our beliefs, entertain us, afford us the opportunity to experience the lives of others, and even make us feel validated in a world that sometimes feels isolating. Books are a safe place to experience tragedy, loss, fears, and life-changing experiences without encountering them first hand. Because of this, I believe in the importance of providing students with high-engaging, relevant books that 鈥渟peak鈥 to them.
We hear often that 鈥渟tudents don鈥檛 read.鈥 That simply is not true. They will read if we offer them books they are interested in or passionate about reading. Something truly magical happens when students who have gotten out of the habit of reading get the right book in their hands. I've seen it with my own eyes--students being sucked in to the story line, so much so that they don't want to put the book down and often beg me for "more reading time!"
The books I've selected may not be of literary merit, won any National Book Awards, or even appear on any 鈥渂est seller鈥 lists; however, these books may instead ignite the passion for reading. That's what this project is all about...reigniting that passion once held by a student to pick up a book and read!
