Reading comprehension is one of the most difficult skills to teach to students. In my school, my students have a lack of background knowledge and vocabulary. With this project, I will be able to utilize the vocabulary books during independent work when they are at their seats.
My students need direct instruction for reading comprehension. Therefore, to help my students develop key reading strategies such as setting, predicting, inferring, summarizing, etc., by using these comprehension activities, I will be able to build on the skills that they lack or need to build on for the rest of their schooling. Along with fiction texts, my students also are struggling with non-fiction texts. The Scholastic News will expose students to different types of non-fiction texts as well as comprehension activities that go along with the passages.
The main focus is to create lifelong readers. If these resources are available, it will allow them to comprehend on their own and become college and career-ready citizens.
