We now live in an era where students do not fully use all digits of their hands as a result of cell phone use, texting and other device use. When playing the piano students learn not just the hands, but the entire body is used - head, to fingertips to feet - working as a whole unit. Playing the piano requires the use of hands, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knuckles, torso and feet to create a "playing machine." Learning to play the piano not only builds confidence but it also builds positive body awareness and most importantly, musical sensitivity.
The addition of piano keyboards to music content instruction will help students with singing and reading music notation. Students will demonstrate their playing skills in performances for the community throughout the school year.
The arts magnet schools in our district want students who have piano skills to be part of their schools. Elementary students interested in auditioning for these impressive arts schools will be better prepared for the audition experience if they have had exposure to piano playing.
