Physical Education places an emphasis on social-emotional learning and of course collaborative participation/learning. Research shows that negative behaviors typically arise from an inability to express a basic need. Some things that I believe can be easily addressed in P.E. is hunger and cleanliness to increase overall participation. Hornet Pantry will allow students to grab a snack at the beginning of class who may be hungry. This simple gesture allows students to focus on the task at hand and sustain their energy during the period. Not only will Hornet Pantry provide access to healthy foods throughout the day, but the pantry will also carry deodorant, body spray, and lotion to limit feelings of embarrassment that arise before and after class when changing clothes. Journals will also be available as outlets to express and reflect on feelings that may be hard to process or describe verbally.
If we can not address, or even simply acknowledge, what our children are facing outside/inside of school how can we expect them to be attentive enough to learn? Hornet Pantry will be the first step in opening up that conversation by providing free access with no strings attached.
