We are an elementary campus that does not include art as a rotation for students. We are fortunate to have electives and after school clubs like coding, cheer, and a book club but I feel art is sorely missing from their life. We would like to include art into the maker-space centers to engage the students in other formats.
Art is an activity where the students can express themselves without using words. We have 93% of our students are English as Second Language learners and they would benefit the most by expressing themselves in artistic form. It will allow the students to have fun while using their critical thinking skills to create a product. They will not have an art class until they reach 6th grade where art is an option.
It would be wonderful to have students creating their own book illustrations with watercolors or learning to weave with a loom. We could read stories like The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco and the students create a collage square with scraps of tissue and colorful paper. The goal is to make the maker-space centers enriching for all types of learners. Help us make our library complete by funding my Donors Choose a project and adding the "A" for art to our STREAM library.
