This fall, my students are learning and practicing study skills to prepare for the Utah Civics Exam, which is a state graduation requirement. Passing this test in 8th grade allows students to cross off their first task to obtain a high school diploma, and avoid falling through the cracks until their senior year when they realize they still need to take it.
Students also increase their knowledge of government and civics, and practice skills like close reading, note taking, and academic discourse as they prepare for the exam. The supplies for my project - including pencils, highlighters, glue sticks for journals, file folders for a class absent work bin, and stickers for rewards - will allow me to work with my students on these specific skills that they can take to high school with them.
