My students have moderate disabilities and live in low-income families, often with no books at home. Many of their parents do not speak English and some do not read or write themselves. Our school is a large suburban high school in Washington State which is very diverse and is extremely accepting of the Life Skills population. My students have learned to love books and reading but their ability to enjoy books is limited by their disabilities, such as dyslexia, and constraints at school, such as time and staffing. They long to be read to and love the independence they feel with audio books.
