As a first year teacher, I have worked hard to provide my students with all the essentials. We have all the resources needed to learn together in effective and fun ways, however, after a few months in the classroom I am realizing that my students need more options for individual and partner reading. My students spend 30-40 minutes reading independently or with a partner each day. Currently they have the carpet, their seats, or the hard floor to choose as a spot. I hope that the bean bags, soft seats, and reading buddies will create a more fun and engaging environment that will help stimulate a desire to read and excitement surrounding our reading time. Reading at your seat or on the carpet is not something that my students look forward to and will not create a love for reading. Help me provide a space where my kiddos can get their books and find the PERFECT spot.
Creating a warm and inviting reading atmosphere will set in place the tone of our year. First grade is instrumental to reading. During first grade my students will move from reading A and B level texts, to reading I and J level texts. They will go from reading word by word to reading for FUN and yearning to talk about what they read. This takes a lot of reading and practice! My students deserve a good place to practice.
