Independent reading helps students make sense of the world and develop the skills they need to actively engage in their community. Through reading, students will discover new words in context, with meaning and nuance that they can use to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. This is why a well-stocked classroom is vital.
Socioeconomic factors can lead to tremendous disparities in access to books at home. During this past Spring when our school went off-site due to COVID-19, several of my students reached out to me explaining that they had no books in their home to complete their reading assignments. Quickly, I dropped off care packages of books from my classroom library in their driveways.
As a result, I need to build a classroom library so that my students have immediate and frequent access to books to encourage reading as well as providing a venue where students and I can easily recommend books to each other.
