We often joke about my book hospital (the growing stack of books on my desk that need pages taped back into the book or the binding taped), but the lack of usable books has become anything but a joking matter. We currently do not have enough books to give students their own copy that isn't almost destroyed.
My hope is to be able to provide each student with a copy of "Of Mice and Men" to better support our classroom learning goals.
I plan to use these books to help my students determine why human relationships are important to society and what we can learn from them. I want to show my students that reading is about more than the words on the page. I plan to use this to elicit discussion and higher-level thinking.
While this year's class is relatively small (45 students), there are upcoming classes with increasing enrollment numbers. To make this project benefit our students for years to come, I have increased the requested number of books to fit our largest class size (as of now) in the next five years.
