Food preparation and cooking are part of the Montessori curriculum. Building practical life lessons skills in areas of daily living is part of the Montessori Method, and it is also proven to help students develop soft skills. These skills help children learn essential life tasks, such as working well with others, having empathy, and being trustworthy and respectful.
With these new kitchen utensils, my students will be able to choose from an area where to develop and practice new skills that will allow them to make independently at their own. They will also be able to choose many dishes, the process of preparing, cooking, seeing the finished dish and then eating something delicious. The best way to increase their practical life ability is to put them on practice, and these will continue to help my students grow stronger.
When children cook in the classroom, they are participating in many developmental activities. Cooking calls into play the greatest number of skills used simultaneously, more than any other activity in the classroom. Cooking is often a big part of Spanish language enrichment at all levels. Preparation of new dishes will be a great way to introduce new vocabulary and new tastes to our children while celebrating other cultures!
