Many studies show that when students read for pleasure for thirty minutes a day, they do better on standardized tests and they build empathy helping to be better humans. Who doesn't want that? My students do ten minutes a day of silent sustained reading at the beginning of every class period. These kids are not otherwise exposed to reading for pleasure. Several of these kids don't own any books on their own or go to a library on their own. They rely on my classroom library. Several of them are learning to love reading through this practice. My library needs to be majorly updated with more current young adult titles that appeal to the students.
