The first project I will do with these amazing books is begin a study on "The One and Only Ivan." We will study character traits and discuss rich non-literal language throughout the story. We'll also keep adding key events to a plot diagram as we learn about expository information, problems, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. All novels in this project will be used in the same way.
In addition to amazing novel studies, my students will begin an animal research project using the animals non-fiction texts. They will have to read about their animal, write about their habitats, the food they eat, classify their animal group, talk about their babies, talk about any adaptations they have, create a labeled diagram with animal parts, and create a 3-D project to share with the class.
Shorter fiction and non-fiction text will be part of our classroom library of books that children can check out during reading time on a daily basis. My students use a graphic organizer to summarize their text and share what they learned with others. These will truly be their new "special books."
