At the U of U the students will get a campus tour and meet university faculty to gather information about the positive outcomes that can arise from obtaining a degree, and the scholarships, programs, freedoms, and responsibility that come with the opportunity for college. This will also provide a different classroom experience for them to see that classes can be much more diverse in a college setting.
The visit to the correction center will be guided by an officer, and the students will have a safe environment to see living conditions and privileges of inmates, and be able to ask questions about life in jail. We have had several students state that they plan on ending up in jail, just for the experience. The purpose will be to let the students see the negative long-term consequences that their life choices will result in if they make poor life choices, and also building a positive relationship with the officers that guide the tour who make sure to make this a non-judgmental experience.
Both of these trips had significant impact on our students last year, and helped them to see their potential and open their eyes to what they want. Students and parents have shared excitement for this opportunity and have gone out of the way to say that they think this is a game-changing experience for their child.
