Kensington was once a bustling hub of industry in Philadelphia. Now things are much different, but our neighborhood and the school remain full of diverse cultures and families and students that are determined to change the world. My students and their families are proud to come from many countries and speak many languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Jamaican Creole.
As the ESL teacher of my elementary school, I look to not only develop my student's language skills but also their cultural identities and self-confidence. I hope to build a classroom library for my students and me to use for multiple purposes: to give interesting choices for independent reading, to bring a variety of topics to our read alouds, and most importantly, to provide "mirrors and windows" into their own cultures as well as each other.
With your support, my students can begin to see literacy as a tool for one major purpose: an opportunity to learn about themselves, their community, and the world around them. Help me bring the joy of literacy to my incredible students in Kensington!
