These books will continue to build my classroom library. As a first year teacher, I aspire to build a diverse collection of books to best support my students. In addition to finding engaging chapter books to help foster a love of reading in my students, I have found several uses for picture books as well. I often use picture books as mentor texts to help teach a specific skill/concept, such as figurative language, or to further enrich the curriculum.
Picture books also hold a special place in my teacher heart because they are also a wonderful way to integrate social emotional learning, something that we practice not only during morning meeting, but during our core subjects as well. In particular, my class this year has been enjoying practicing mindfulness with the "I Am" collection by Susan Verde and Peter Reynolds.
Through this project, I not only hope to enrich my students experience with books to create lifelong readers, but ensure that each student feels celebrated and sees themself in my classroom!
