When I made the committment to be an educator, I also promised to be a lifelong learner who is responsive to the individual needs of each child placed in my classroom.
There is no better way for a teacher to improve his/her practice than by capturing a picture of their current reality. In order to gain this critical insight I would like to use a recording device called The Swivl Camera.
By recording my own teaching with the Swivl Camera, I will be able to watch myself and reflect on my own teaching. I would celebrate the positives, but also set goals to change areas of need. (Are my students engaged? Am I addressing all of my students? Am I being equitable with my questioning? Is my questioning effective?...)
Once I complete my own "coaching session", I would like to offer the process to my colleagues, so that they too could gain important insight into their current teaching, and go on to improve their practices.
In addition to being a 3rd grade classroom teacher, I am an Internal Literacy Consultant within my school district. I could continue to video my lessons for other purposes, such as modeling, new teacher orientation, and peer observations.
I have spoken with several teachers and instructional coaches who use the Swivl in their schools. The feedback is super positive!
