Together, students will embark on a whole class reading of Toni Morrison's, "Song of Solomon", a novel that delicately frames the concept of individualism and personal identity. San Jacinto High School is the only comprehensive high school servicing San Jacinto, California. We are one hundred percent free lunch and approximately nineteen percent of our citizens live below the poverty line. My students often ask whether or not I believe the novels we teach are diverse enough. My honest answer and I tell this to each of them, is no, we do not. We teach what is easily accessible, in the public domain, and what fetches the most reasonable price for a class set. Toni Morrison's, "Song of Solomon" will set the groundwork for a project and presentation about individuality and personal identity to be completed by my eleventh grade students.
