I teach in an elementary school that is part of a large school district. Students are provided with many opportunities to discuss what they are reading in small groups, large groups, and with reading buddies. The more books available for students, the greater the buzz becomes.
My students are full of curiosity and are avid readers who love to share their favorite books! They are funny and bright and love to talk about the books they are reading. I love to hear what they are reading about and what they love to read. We will never pass an opportunity to add another book to our discussion!! Help me build a classroom library with at least 10 books for each student.
Our new Superintendent has challenged teachers to create a 鈥渂ook-rich鈥 environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development. Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to be 鈥渃hoosy鈥 about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. Having a high-quality classroom library would allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
