Children with autism spectrum disorder are amazing! They have challenges to overcome in their daily lives that many of us would not notice as being a challenge or barrier. They often have difficulty with spatial control and with sensory overload. Having sensory input items such as a wobble chair, body sock, and magnetic tiles to offer my students would help them in their ability to self-regulate when they are feeling overwhelmed in their environment.
When children with autism spectrum disorder are provided with sensory items, they are learning to use these items to help in self-regulation, which helps in decreasing self injurious behaviors and aggressive behaviors towards others. When they are provided with replacement items such as sensory body socks, blocks, fidget toys, or alternative seating options they are less likely to engage in maladaptive behaviors.
These items would be very beneficial to my students and would give them the sensory input their bodies need to function in their environment!
Thank you!!!
