As a speech and language pathologist, I don't get the same budget allocation or supplies from my schools or PTA that a regular classroom teacher does, even though I work with the same number of students. My materials are not just for use by me in my therapy sessions, but I also try to work in the classrooms and support the teachers in their environment so that my students have the best chance for success.
I need supplies (printer, laminating pouches and laminator) to make picture symbols, communication boards, and visual supports for activities (e.g., sequence pictures). The easel will be essential to display symbols, write/draw key concepts, and to allow students to follow simple directions (e.g., "Circle the _" or "Draw a line from _ to _").
Different seating options will help students who have difficulty sitting still to focus, attend, and participate in more structured activities. Many of my students have articulation (speech production) difficulties which interfere with early reading skills (e.g., making letter sounds and blending them into words). The Phonological Awareness materials can be used for many different skills (e.g., articulation, early reading, vocabulary, describing, categorizing)
These basic items will directly impact my students and their classroom teachers!
