These graphic novels will supplement the 8th grade unit studying the Japanese Internment of the 1940s. Each year, the English Dept. has the 8th grade class read Return to Manzanar. Although a great novel we will continue to use, Manzanaris far away and doesn't have the immediate interest of something closer to home. The inclusion of a novel written by someone interned in Tule Lake will greatly improved student participation. Additionally, differentiating our materials with a graphic novel will be of high interest to our best readers and increase engagement in our 8th graders who struggle with reading a bit more.
